Thai Union enters US scallop sector through agreement with Northern Wind

March 6, 2017, 8:44 pm

Thai Union Group has entered the US scallop business with a marketing agreement to source and distribute frozen scallops globally with Northern Wind, a processor based in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

In a statement sent out Monday, Thai Union’s US subsidiary Tri-Union Frozen Products, which trades as Chicken of the Sea Frozen Foods (COSFF), announced the agreement.

Ann Ochiltree, a spokeswoman for Chicken of the Sea, declined to comment to Undercurrent News on whether an investment had been made. COSFF’s acquisition of lobster supplier Orion Seafood International in February 2015had been preceded with the announcement of a marketing agreement in June 2014.

She did, however, confirm this is an entry into a new sector for COSFF.

“We had done a small amount of business with scallops in the past, but domestic scallops is a new product for COSFF. Scallops are an exciting category that is gaining popularity as a responsibly-sourced, high-end protein. It will complement and strengthen COSFF’s existing portfolio of products,” she told Undercurrent, in an emailed comment.

According to the press release, Northern Wind work with contracted vessels harvesting an estimated 20% of the allowable scallop catch along the eastern seaboard

The company’s “production capacity provide a platform for significant growth when partnered with COSFF’s nationally recognized brand and infrastructure”, according to the release.

“We look forward to working with the team at Chicken of the Sea Frozen Foods to broaden our distribution and support sales. This association should benefit our customer partners as we maximize our strengths across all trade channels,” said George Kouri, co-CEO of Northern Wind, in the press release.

“We are excited about the opportunity to combine Northern Wind’s expertise and sustainability footprint with our distribution network. The two companies are well positioned to further develop this important category,” said Bryan Rosenberg, CEO of COSFF, in the release.

Suppliers and customers will continue to interact with their Northern Wind and COSFF contacts as they have done in the past. “Through this new partnership, we will build on the leadership position that Northern Wind has developed over the past 30 years, to the benefit of all customers,” said Ken Melanson, chairman of Northern Wind.

New additions to Northern Wind

The deal with COSFF comes after some additions to the Northern Wind team.

Last April, the firm added Johnny Richards, a veteran of Wanchese Fish Company as its director of foodservice business. This came after Undercurrent revealed Marlees Seafood co-founder John Lees was working with Northern Wind.

Lees, who recently concluded a long-running legal dispute with the majority shareholder of Marlees in a settlement, was recently listed on Northern Wind’s website as co-CEO, along with Kouri, but is now listed as a “consultant”.

Up until late last year, Kouri was chief operating officer of Northern Wind, but is now co-CEO. He declined to comment on this to Undercurrent, in addition to the reason for the change to Lees’ title.
